Rural and Historic Williams and Durham Townships
Although it shares the Easton zip code of 18042, Williams Township has more in common with neighboring Durham Township, Bucks County, than it does with the city of Easton. (As recounted in the historical research of Stone Cottage Woods, much of Stouts Valley Road was previously owned by the Durham Mining Company and part of Bucks County, prior to the incorporation of Northampton County in 1752.) Both townships are known for their quaint and rural byways, open space and historic buildings.
Williams Township and the Williams Township Volunteer Fire Company sponsor community activities like an annual summer carnival and Fall Festival. Both Williams and Durham Townships have active historical societies offering free public events and notable guest speakers. Williams Township schools, score at the top of Lehigh Valley and Northampton County school districts.
One of the natural treasures of Williams Township is the Mariton Wildlife Sanctuary. Easily accessible to Stone Cottage Woods by foot, bike or car, the 200 acre sanctuary is perched on the slope of Bougher Hill and overlooks the scenic Delaware River which forms the eastern border of Williams and Durham townships. Programming includes nature walks, migratory bird census taking and walks, and even moonlit night walks to listen for owls and other night wildlife. Mariton Sanctuary includes a library, meeting center, and hiking trails ranging from 3 to 6 miles. Another local treasure is the Delaware Canal Towpath, a 60 mile run along the Delaware River frequented by joggers, bicyclists and dog-walkers. With an access point just 3 miles away from Stone Cottage Woods, one can launch a kayak on the river, or enjoy a leisurely stroll dotted with occasional farm stands, country stores and inns, and undeveloped wilderness.
